Commercial vs Home Treadmill: What Gym Owners Should Know
By Skelcore India
A commercial treadmill is built to run for hours every day, for years, with different people on it. A home treadmill is built for one family that runs maybe an hour a day. That is the whole difference, and it explains almost everything else: the motor, the frame, the belt, the price and the way each one fails.
If you own a gym, a hotel or an office wellness room, this matters. A home treadmill bought to save money usually costs more in the end. Here is how to tell the two apart and what to look for when you buy a commercial treadmill.
How a commercial treadmill differs from a home one
From the outside, the two look alike. A belt, a console, two side rails. Inside, the choices are very different. Here is a quick comparison.
| Point | Home treadmill | Commercial treadmill |
| Expected use | One household, short sessions | Many members, long hours, every day |
| Motor | Sized for peak power on paper | Rated for continuous duty (it can run all day without overheating) |
| Frame and deck | Lighter, often folds | Heavier, rigid, does not fold |
| Max user weight | Usually lower | Higher rating, so it suits all your members |
| Servicing | Owner or local mechanic | Parts and service support from the supplier |
| Price | Lower upfront | Higher upfront, lower cost per year of use |
Folding is a good example. A folding frame is handy in a flat. In a gym it is one more joint that can loosen under hundreds of runs a week.
The motor rating is where buyers get fooled
You will see two horsepower numbers on many treadmills. One is the peak figure. The other is the continuous figure, which is what the motor can hold while running for a long time. For a gym, the continuous number is the one that counts.
Our Black Series 5.0 has a 5 HP AC motor, rated at 3 HP continuous. The 6.0 has a 6 HP AC motor, rated at 4 HP continuous. We quote both numbers openly because you should ask every supplier for both. If a seller only gives you one number, ask for the other.
AC motors are the usual choice for commercial treadmills because they are made for long, steady running. Many cheaper home treadmills use DC motors. A DC motor is fine for a family, but it is not what you want under 60 members a day.
Check the specs that match your members
Do not buy on horsepower alone. Look at these four things on any treadmill spec sheet.
- Max user weight. Our Black Series treadmills are rated for 396 lb (180 kg). Your heaviest member should sit well inside the limit.
- Speed range. The 5.0 runs from 0.6 to 13 mph (1 to 22 kph). The 6.0 goes from 0.6 to 15.5 mph (1 to 25 kph). Most members never go past 12 kph, but your fitter runners and any sprint intervals will use the top end.
- Size. The 5.0 needs a footprint of about 2145 x 940 mm, and the 6.0 about 2110 x 990 mm. Add clear space behind the belt. Never plan the floor with the machine touching the wall.
- Console. Both have a 21.5-inch screen. The 5.0 is an LED console. The 6.0 has a TFT screen with screen mirroring and Chromecast, which members like when they want to watch their own content.
Power supply: ask your electrician first
This catches many first-time buyers. We list our Black Series treadmills in 220V and 110V versions. Indian gyms normally run on 220V, so that is what most owners need. Tell us your supply when you ask for a quote, and have your electrician confirm that the circuit can handle a row of treadmills starting up together.
Five treadmills on one weak circuit will trip it. Plan separate lines for the cardio zone before the machines arrive.
Which one should you buy?
Here is how we would advise different buyers.
A 2,000 sq ft neighbourhood gym. Most of your members walk and jog. Start with the 5.0 LED model. It does everything they need, and you can spend the saving on more strength machines. How many treadmills you need depends on your member count and peak hours. Our gym setup page and the gym setup cost guide help you split the budget.
A hotel gym with one room. Guests use it for 20 to 30 minutes at odd hours. Noise and a simple console matter more than top speed. One or two treadmills, a clear display and a quiet motor will do. See our hotel gym equipment page for room-size ideas.
A corporate or hospital gym. Usage peaks at lunch and after work, and members are of mixed fitness. Pick the larger weight rating and keep a screen that is easy to read. Our corporate gym equipment page covers this in more detail.
A premium gym with a younger crowd. The 6.0 TFT model makes sense. Members notice the bigger speed range and screen mirroring, and a good cardio floor helps with retention.
Do you need a motorised treadmill at all?
Not always. If your gym runs HIIT classes or has a conditioning zone, a curved treadmill is worth a look. It has no motor. The runner drives the belt, so pace follows effort. Our SK6000 Curved Free Running Treadmill is rated for users up to 170 kg, has four levels of magnetic tension, and needs no electricity.
That last point is useful in a studio where power points are limited. It also has a smaller footprint (about 1780 x 870 mm). But it is a different workout. Walking on a curved belt is hard, so beginners and older members will still want a motorised machine. Treat the curved treadmill as an addition, not a replacement.
What affects the price
We do not publish treadmill prices on the website. Price is on request, and it depends on a few things:
- The model and console (LED or TFT)
- How many machines you order
- Voltage version (220V or 110V)
- Delivery location and floor access
- Installation and GST, which are quoted separately
Ask for the quote on the full cardio zone, not one machine at a time. You will get a clearer picture of the real cost.
A short checklist before you order
- Count how many members use cardio at peak hours and plan treadmills for that rush, not the average hour.
- Ask for the continuous HP, not just the peak figure.
- Check the max user weight and the speed range.
- Confirm your voltage and circuit capacity with an electrician.
- Measure the room, including the space behind the belt and the path through the door.
- Ask who handles service and spare parts, and how fast. [TODO: confirm service response time and warranty terms for treadmills]
- Check [TODO: confirm lead time for treadmill delivery and installation].
You can browse the full range on our cardio equipment page, or look straight at the Black Series, which holds both the 5.0 and 6.0 treadmills in every version.
